Nonetheless, the potential applications for AI are endless, from improving healthcare to detecting and flagging fraudulent activity in banking and finance. AI can even be utilized to make trading easier and more streamlined.

 Artificial but creative? How AI can support the development of new ideas


Artificial intelligence is considered the tool of the future. Artificial intelligence has entered everyday life. But can it also be creative and develop new ideas? Or can it just handle our input? Can artificial intelligence play a role in the human creative process? GDI wrote a research report on this. 
Research shows that despite an increase in research spending, fewer and fewer innovative and breakthrough ideas are being produced. The great hope for accelerating the pace of innovation again lies in artificial intelligence (AI). Many experts today agree that AI will not develop entirely new ideas on its own; however, AI can help humans do so in a number of ways, as AI can enhance human creativity.
Chief among the many ways AI can enhance human creativity is its ability to free us from mundane tasks like searching for information and free up more time for stimulating activities that lead to new ideas.
Despite its potential, AI cannot support all the human skills necessary to generate ideas, such as real-life observation or face-to-face interaction. Additionally, exploring without a specific goal, adding new areas of knowledge along the way, and improvising poses challenges for AI. For example, a tool that optimizes routes based on CO2 emissions won't simply suggest us train transport or videoconferencing meetings.

Conversely, AI can also hinder human creativity by preventing us from spending time on activities that have been shown to be important for generating new ideas, such as open communication with others, positive reflection, and mental peace. Many digital applications today are designed to consume as much time as possible, with great success.
Through AI, even more activities will be enabled by digital technology (e.g. cooking with smart speakers), and AI’s ability to influence human behaviour will grow, for example, through algorithms that can predict our behaviour and communicate in natural language.

Therefore, in order to harness the potential of artificial intelligence to unleash human creativity, we should take the following actions:
  • We should use AI for tasks that are clearly superior to humans, and where the benefits of human activity (e.g., due to increased experience) do not outweigh the benefits of automation, such as when searching in large literature repositories.
  • We should develop AI applications that support the skills and activities necessary to generate ideas. For example, since humans are better at exploring things without specific outcomes, AI tools should allow humans to interactively explore data and rapidly develop, test, and refine hypotheses.
  • Time gained through AI should be allocated to activities that are critical to the development of new ideas, such as unbiased communication with others or active reflection. This requires targeted action; otherwise, digital technology may tempt us to spend too much time on non-creative pursuits.
The goal should be to use AI precisely where it can support human creativity, not where it can do more harm than good. Human creativity needs to be both nurtured and protected by AI. In the future, the most successful ideas may not only come from the brightest minds, but also from those who are best able to steer machines in the desired direction.
